WONDERFUL TOYS

Romulo Royo’s work explores other series that, within fantastical art, can be considered an exponent of what has been called Neo-Japanism in the art world: that anachronistic tangle of influences that orbit around Japan, also incorporating certain Western and Asian influences but, despite everything, still maintaining a strong Japanese feel.

In pieces such as Your Sexy Beast or Mickey Mouse Exists, among the artist’s brushstrokes we can see glimpses of these influences in the figures of Doraemon, Star Wars, Pikachu or Mickey Mouse..

However, it is not only Japanese pop culture that is conveyed through these brushstrokes; traditional figures representative of Japanese history, such as Tomoe Gozen, find their place on his canvases, making up one of his most famous series.
