_______________
Rómulo Royo’s exhibition represents a firm commitment to a young artist characterized by extraordinary maturity. Endowed with enormous talent and far removed from complacent mannerism, he has created paintings and sculptures that deal, time and again, with the image of man in contemporary times. His allusion to Siamese twins is perhaps an allegory of our ambiguous condition, that is, the tension between opposites that sometimes tears us apart. We are duplicated, even if only imaginatively; we look at ourselves in the mirror and feel estranged, unsure how to confront our critical condition. Because the crisis is not only that which marks the abyss of the economy but also that which has to do with the difficulty of finding criteria, making decisions, or learning to escape the labyrinth. At the crossroads of the crisis, artists continue to possess a visionary capacity that offers us, in the midst of disaster, a glimmer of hope. Rómulo Royo composes a multifaceted portrait of man, poised between the real and the virtual. He captures faces of disconcerting sensuality, lays bare his imagination, and compels us to try to find our own true selves within them. I am convinced that those who view this exhibition will not be left unmoved or disappointed; on the contrary, they will have ample reason to engage in an aesthetic and existential experience of the utmost intensity.
