BRAFA had its grand opening in 1955, and it’s still growing to this day, receiving over 55.000 visitors in its last editions. In this edition, 126 galleries exhibit works by numerous internationally aclaimed artists, of various cronology and discipline, some of them being Jacques de Loustal, André Juillard, Miles Hyman, Joost Swarte, Philippe Berthet, Guido Crepax, Ever Meulen, Frank Pé, Antonio Lapone, Luis Royo & Romulo Royo, Hugo Pratt, Louis Joos, Javier Mariscal, Idir Davaine, Yann Kebbi, Ruben Pellejero, François Schuiten or Theo Van den Boogaard.

In this exhibition, every work resonates with the theme that lends its name to the exhibition, “Transatlantic(s)“, this ocean which unites two poles of comics art creativity : Europe and America. It’s an evocative word conjuring up the allurel of travel, which has always nourished the magic of comics and illustration.

Luis Royo y Romulo Royo showcase in this context some pieces from their collective project Malefic Time, exhibited in stand no. 50, with Galerie Champaka.

With Malefic Time, Romulo Royo delves into a narrative universe where dystopia and spirituality intertwine in an apocalyptic vision of the contemporary world. Together with Luis Royo, he conceives a transmedia saga that combines painting, illustration, literature, and music, shaping a unique cosmos inhabited by archetypal figures, ancient symbols, and cities transformed into end-of-times settings.

Through the protagonist, Luz (the embodiment of feminine power and the duality between destruction and rebirth), Malefic Time unfolds a reflection on the collapse of old structures and the search for a new consciousness. In his canvases, Romulo explores the beauty and violence of change, the light that emerges amid the ruins, and the eternal struggle between the human and the divine.

“The sky has fractured, and the cities crumble beneath an ancient silence.
Through the shadows walks Luz, bearer of a destiny she never asked for,
called to choose between the end and rebirth.
Angels and forgotten gods awaken, old prophecies come to pass,
and amid the chaos, a new light begins to burn.”
