EL AQUELARRE

Oil on canvas, 2023
230 x 185 cm

Unpublished painting made for the series Homage to Goya by the artist Romulo Royo, which revolves around the aesthetic and thematic similarities that the Aragonese artists share despite the centuries that separate them. Exhibited inside the Palazzo Ducale di Lucca, Italy.

A large format work made in oil on Belgian linen that transports us to the past from the look of the present that brings Romulo Royo. A work that gains strength through a great historical piece that pays homage to the great artist Francisco de Goya through the brushstroke of another artist, also from Aragon, of our times, with his unique and personal style. Two looks and two styles in a single painting.

Here the artist is imbued in a magical universe of Goya and captures it from another prism: the horror of the works of the artist of the past merges into a great delicate beauty through the artist of the present. He shows us a jungle landscape that serves as a shelter for the druids, the meigas, the witches, the fairies or nymphs, delicate female characters around a monster, between anthropomorphic and zoomorphic, winged, the vision of Baphomet himself, which seems to be the object of devotion, as a divine being, of these women.

Once again Romulo represents the woman always from a leading position in the scene, in this case there is an aura of mysticism surrounding the scene, in the words of the artist, Witch formerly meant woman knew, they were the first healers for their knowledge of plants and nature. Witch is a word like so many others that later would denigrate religion and also everything related to women, such as the number 13, the menstrual rules during the year or the passage of Eve and the forbidden apple, symbolizing temptation.
