“Tomoe Gozen is one of the iconic figures of traditional Japanese history, myths and legends.
In the case of the paintings of Tomoe Gozen, the warrior woman (Onna-bugeisha) who fought on the side of the Minamoto clan, served as inspiration for Rómulo Royo to execute his own interpretation of this legendary figure in his series Tomoe Gozen (2014).
The average viewer is accustomed to seeing this warrior represented in media such as Ukiyo-e. Romulo Royo’s offering is impactful because of its “realism”, and the details of the face of the young woman. In addition, all this is filtered by an aesthetic of gothic features that characterises the whole project and works perfectly with the fantasy style so characteristic of him.”
